How To Clean Floor Tiles & Grout

Floor tiles and grout can look wonderfully crisp and stylish on a newly laid floor.  They have a lovely traditional look and offer a hard-wearing practical element to your home.

If you’re trying to choose the type of tiles and grout for your type of floor, you’ll have noticed how vast the selection is.  There’s a bewildering choice from ceramic and porcelain tiles to marble, granite, limestone and terracotta. And they come in all manner of shapes, sizes, colours and patterns.

But, from time to time, your floor tiles and grout will need professional cleaning, just like your carpets.

What Is Tile Grout?

Floor tiles are conventionally made from a natural clay and sand mix.  They’re fired in a kiln to ensure they’re tough and durable.

floor tiles and grout being laidGrout is usually a mixture of cement and sand mixed with water.  There are ‘sanded’ and ‘unsanded’ varieties which affect how the grout looks and how strong it is.  Finely ground silica sand is used in the ‘sanded’ version.  The ‘unsanded’ version has a smoother, non-gritty texture and can be enhanced with polymers and/or latex.

The grouting mixture is used to bond and seal the joints between the tiles when they’re first laid.  When it’s dry, the tile grout forms a protective barrier against water and helps prevent liquids and dirt from getting underneath.

The colour of grout is often neutral or grey but you can also choose different colours to complement your tile or room colours.

Why Do Floor Tiles & Grout Look Dirty?

Hard-wearing tiled floors are often laid in rooms that have heavy foot traffic or in places like kitchens & utility rooms.  Over time dirt, soil and food spills start to leave stains on your floor tiles and grout leaving them looking dirty and discoloured.

Sometimes, the cleaning methods and solutions are the cause of the problem.  Substances such as ammonia or bleach can stain both your floor tiles and grout.  Mopping dirty tiled floors can often make things worse. The action of using a mop can simply spread the dirt around like a soupy mess over your floor, rather than removing it.

Before and after photos. Floor tiles and grout can look cloudy

You may have noticed that no matter how hard you try to keep your stone or tiled floor clean, it never has that same pristine shine it did when it was new.  That’s because a filmy residue, caused by certain types of cleaning products, can build up over time making your floor look dull and almost cloudy.

The Rutland Cleaning Company Tile & Grout Cleaning Service

The key to cleaning and restoring floor tiles and grout is knowing the best type of cleaning solutions to use. My advanced cleaning techniques help gently strip away dirt and restore shine.

I use a non-odorous, natural selection of cleaning products.  This means that there aren’t any nasty lingering smells in your home during or after the cleaning process.

The procedure doesn’t take long and there’s very little disruption whilst it’s in progress.  You’ll also be able to choose the type of finish you’d like from a high gloss, mid-sheen or natural finish.

At the end of every Rutland Cleaning Company’s tile and grout cleaning service, we’ll give you a set of cleaning instructions to help you keep your tiled floor looking like new.
