There’s nothing nicer than a freshly laid tiled floor but after a while you’ll be aware of grout stains.
It doesn’t seem fair does it? You spend all that time selecting and paying for a brand new kitchen floor to be laid and in next to no time it starts to look dirty. Spilled sauces, dropped baking ingredients, mud traipsed in from the garden and even the dogs dinner – it all gets lodged in those perfect lines between the tiles that are so difficult to get clean.
What Is Grout
Grout is the substance used to fill in the gaps between floor tiles. It can be made up from a mixture of powdered cement, lime, colour pigment and sometimes sand mixed with water. The grout mixture colour can be changed to blend with the colour of your floor tiles but white is most commonly used in bathrooms.
The grout mixture is spread into the spaces in-between your floor tiles and the excess is wiped away before it dries. As the grout hardens, it creates a strong bond between the tiles and helps to keep water, dirt and debris from getting in underneath your tiles. Without a properly laid grout your floor tiles will fail and start lifting. Additionally, grout will give your floor a crisp, neat look and is the perfect finishing touch.
You can use some floor grout for wall tiles for your bathroom or shower cubicle. Most grout is suitable for use with ceramic, marble, limestone and travertine floor tiles, but it’s always good to check with your hardware store or supplier first if you’re doing the job yourself.
I often find that grout stains are often built up over time. But in a busy family house with pets it might happen quicker than in a quieter house.
How To Clean Grout Stains
Try to mop up spills quickly, whenever they happen, using a damp cloth with warm water.
Make a solution of baking soda and white wine vinegar stirring it into a thick paste and leave it on the stained grout for about 15 minutes. You’ll need a stiff toothbrush to brush in-between all your floor tiles, making sure to work the baking soda paste into the grout before wiping off with a clean cloth and warm water.
