How To Prevent Static Attracting Dust

How many times have you wished that your home didn’t get so dusty?  I mean, it seems as though no sooner you’ve done the housework than it needs doing all over again.  And all that dust?  It gets everywhere doesn’t it … and you’d be surprised how much dust and dirt accumulates in your carpets and upholstery too!

So, let’s take a look at the causes.  Static electricity is a big contributor to the amount of dust that you see on your shelves, TVs, tables and skirting boards.

What Is Static Electricity?

Static electricity is an imbalance of electrical charges within or on the surface of a material or object. In our homes, we generally see this as a build up of electric charge on the surface of objects.

If you’ve ever shuffled your feet on a carpet and then touched someone else in the room, you’ll have given off a ‘shock’ that often has a crackling sound. It’s the same effect when you rub a balloon on your head and watch the static electricity make your hair stand on end.  The static stays with the object, or person, until there’s a way for it to discharge i.e. when you touch someone.

The problem is that static electricity is also the culprit in attracting dust to objects in your home.  And that also includes your carpets too.  Just look at the amount of dust and dirt that I extracted from just one rug!

So, here are my Five Top Tips to help you reduce the static electricity in your home & speed up the housework:

  1. Use electrostatic cloths when you do the dusting
  2. Use a damp mop on hard floors
  3. In some areas, it may be better to use area rugs rather than carpeting
  4. Upgrade the HVAC filter in your vacuum cleaner
  5. Use dryer sheets to gently wipe down TVs and computers

You can also try a home made antistatic solution to use when you dust:

  • Add 1 part fabric softener to one part water in a spray bottle,
  • Shake gently to mix.
  • Then spray a little of the solution on your cloth and dust
  • Great for glass topped coffee tables!

Remember, the more clutter you have in your home the more dust it will attract.  Perhaps now’s a good time to have a little clear out?

Getting your carpets, rugs and upholstery professionally cleaned every year is an excellent way to reduce the amount of hidden dust in your home.
