Most of us try not to think about the other living organisms that we might be sharing our homes with. But, today, I thought I’d pull back the covers on a very common but unseen inhabitant in your home: dust mites.
These tiny creatures are often overlooked but they can be responsible for causing allergies and other health issues.
What are Dust Mites?
They’re tiny, microscopic creatures that belong to the arachnid family (spiders and ticks are part of the same family). They’re not really insects at all as they have eight legs and not six.
Dust mites are only about 0.2-0.3mm long. This means that, without a magnifying glass, you’re unlikely to be able to see them.
But don’t underestimate these tiny critters – they can have a significant impact on our lives. They’re a common allergen and can exacerbate respiratory issues for some people.
Where Can You Find Them?
Dust mites love to hang out in warm, humid environments and they like nothing better to eat than dead skin cells shed by humans and pets. These tiny guests invade every part of your home but are particularly comfortable in areas with a high concentration of human activity. Some of the most common places to find them include:
- Carpets and rugs: Microscopic mites can easily hide and breed in the fibres of your carpets and rugs.
- Upholstered furniture: Sofas, chairs and other fabric items provide a comfortable home.
- Bedding and mattresses: The warmth and humidity of a comfy bed provides a prime location for our uninvited guests to gather.
- Curtains: They can also settle in the folds of your curtains and window blinds.
- Stuffed animals and soft toys: They may look cute but you may want to put them in the washing machine from time to time as they’re a breeding ground for dust mites.
Managing Allergens in Your Home
It’s almost impossible to completely eradicate dust mites from your home but there are a few steps that will help reduce their numbers.
- Regularly clean your carpets and rugs: Professional carpet cleaning services, like those I offer at The Rutland Cleaning Company, can help eliminate dust mites and allergens from your carpets.
- Vacuum frequently: use any household vacuum cleaner with a HEPA filter to remove dust mites and allergens from your home.
- Wash bedding and soft furnishings: It’s important to regularly wash (or dry clean) your bedding, curtains and other soft furnishings.
- Use allergy-proof covers: Mattresses, pillows and duvets can be put inside allergen-resistant covers to prevent dust mites from spreading.
- Maintain humidity levels: Keep the humidity in your home below 50% to make the environment less hospitable for dust mites. You can use small dehumidifiers in bathrooms and bedrooms that will help.
